Today the Church celebrates Saint Pius X, Pope, remembered especially for his deep devotion to the Eucharist and his encouragement of the frequent reception of Holy Communion.
Born Giuseppe Sarto in 1835 into a poor family in northern Italy, he was ordained a priest and served the Church as parish priest, bishop and cardinal before being elected Pope in 1903.
Despite the responsibilities of his office, Pius X remained deeply conscious of his humble beginnings and sought to live with simplicity. His desire was to lead people closer to Christ, taking as his papal motto “To restore all things in Christ.”
One of the most enduring aspects of his pontificate was his promotion of frequent Holy Communion. He also lowered the age at which children could receive their First Holy Communion, encouraging them to come to Jesus in the Eucharist once they had reached the age of reason.
Pius X also worked for the renewal of the Church’s liturgical life, promoted the study of Scripture and reformed Church law and administration.
His final years were overshadowed by growing tensions in Europe. Deeply distressed by the outbreak of the First World War in 1914, he died on 20 August, only weeks after the conflict began.
Pope Pius X was canonised by Pope Pius XII in 1954.
His life reminds us of the importance of simplicity, holiness and, above all, remaining close to Christ in the Eucharist.
🙏 Saint Pius X, pray for us.
